5.71 crore devotees take holy dip in Sangam on Mauni Amavasya during Maha Kumbh

Faith and belief has led crores of devotees to Prayagraj to bathe at Triveni Sangam- the confluence of the Ganges.

The Yamuna and the Saraswati rivers- during the Maha Kumbh. Wednesday, January 29, saw over 5 crore devotees take a holy dip on Mauni Amavasya (new moon), the day of the second Shahi Snan (royal bath). The day was marred by a stampede that broke out in the wee hours of Wednesday, but that did not stop devotees from making their way to the ghats.

Till 4.30 pm, 5.71 crore people had taken a holy dip in Triveni waters on Wednesday, as per Uttar Pradesh Information Department. The world’s largest religious gathering, held every 12 years, is special this time around as the Maha Kumbh 2025 is ordained by a rare alignment of four planets, which only takes place every 144 years.

So far, nearly 20 crore people have taken holy dip in the sacred waters of the Sangam, as per the Uttar Pradesh Information Department. The festival, which started on Makar Sankranti on January 13, concludes on Maha Shivaratri on February 26. Around 45 crore devotees are expected to take a trip to Prayagraj to attend the holy gathering.

January 29 saw a surge in turnout on the occasion of Mauni Amavasya Amrit Snan, with over 5.71 crore people completing their ritual bath. A day before, on Tuesday, 4.83 crore people took a holy dip.

On Makar Sankranti, 3.5 crore devotees took the ritual bath, 1.7 crore on Paush Purnima, 1.74 crore took on January 26, and 1.55 crore on January 27, as per a report by news agency PTI.

The Mauni Amavasya, however, was marred by a stampede that occurred in the early hours as thousands of devotees broke through barriers while thronging the Triveni Sangam. At least 10 people are feared dead in the tragic incident.
