Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar resigned from the post hours after the Janata Dal (United) snapped ties with the BJP and walked out of the NDA alliance.

All MPs and MLAs wanted to leave NDA, Kumar said after meeting Bihar Governor at Raj Bhavan on Tuesday. “I have resigned. JD(U) has broken the alliance with BJP. All MPs and MLAs wanted to leave NDA,” the JD(U) chief told reporters outside Raj Bhavan.

After leaving Raj Bhavan, Nitish Kumar headed straight to meet Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Tejashwi Yadav. The RJD is expected to formally announce its support for Nitish Kumar, reviving an earlier alliance with him. Tejashwi Yadav is also expected to accompany Nitish Kumar at a meeting with the Governor.

This development comes after Nitish Kumar chaired a meeting with all JD(U) lawmakers in which the party unanimously decided to break ties with the BJP.

Sources privy to the JD(U) meeting said Nitish Kumar lashed out at the BJP in front of party MPs and MLAs. He said the BJP had always insulted JD(U) leaders and tried to weaken the party.

On Monday, the RJD, Congress and Left parties had indicated that they would support JD(U) if it ditched the BJP.

The ‘Mahagathbandhan’ of which the Left parties, RJD and Congress are a part, had won 110 seats in the 2020 state elections, with RJD securing 75 seats to be the largest party in the state.
