Jayalalitha suffered from bacteremia, septic shock with respiratory infection: AIIMS report

A report by the seven-member AIIMS medical panel constituted as per directions of the Supreme Court has submitted a report stating.

That the AIIMS panel agrees with treatment and diagnosis given to former Tamil Nadu chief minister and AIADMK Supremo J Jayalalitha who was admitted to Apollo hospitals and passed away on December 5, 2016.

The AIIMS medical panel, in its report, said that it agreed with the final diagnosis of the treating team which stated Jayalalitha suffered from Bacteremia, septic shock with respiratory infection, heart failure, hypertension, hypothyroid, asthmatic bronchitis, irritable bowel syndrome and atopic dermatitis.

The report by the medical panel, headed by Dr Sandeep Seth, Professor, Department of Cardiology, was submitted on August 4. The sequence of events reviewed by AIIMS panel has revealed that Jayalalitha was already being treated for uncontrolled diabetes, vertiga, atopic dermatitis, irritable bowel syndrome, hypothyroidism and chronic bronchitis.

She was admitted to Apollo on September 22, 2016 and was admitted to Emergency room in Apollo hospital. Her blood sugar level was 560 mg/dl during admission and she had been given Insulin and antibiotics. A temporary pacemaker was fixed while Dopamine and Noradrenaline were administered.

The report has stated that there was an improvement in her health on September 27, 2016. But on October 7, tracheostomy was done after additional consultation with doctors including Dr Richard Beele.

AIIMS panel stated on December 4, 2016, that Jayalalitha suffered from increased breathlessness and ventilation was started. Doctors declared her dead after maintaining ECMO for 24 hours.
