Marizanne Kapp’s five for 15 and Shafali Verma’s incredible 76 helped the Delhi Capitals thrash Gujarat Giants by 10 wickets to return back to winning ways on Saturday in the WPL 2023.
DC came into the match after their loss to MI while Giants had defeated RCB in their previous encounter.
The Gujarat Giants had won the toss on the day and elected to bat first. The decision proved to be the wrong one as Kapp picked up the wicket of Meghana with the second ball of the match.
She then returned in her second over to dismiss Wolvaardt and Gardner to have GG reeling at nine for three. The wickets kept tumbling for the Giants as the likes of Hemalatha, Harleen Deol and Sushma Verma all returned to the pavilion without making a big impact to have them lose six wickets with just 33 runs on the board. With the wicket of Sushma, Kapp completed her five-wicket haul.
Wareham and Kim Garth restored some pride to the innings with a 33-run partnership before the former was dismissed by Radha Yadav. Tanuja Kanwar provided some support to Garth, who top scored with 32 runs and remained not out as the Giants posted 105 runs.
It was pure carnage once the Capitals innings started, as Shafali took a liking to the Giants bowlers and started to hit them all around the DY Patil stadium.
The Indian batter looked a class apart, which forced her captain to play second fiddle to her as she smashed the second-fastest fifty this season off just 19 balls.
The Capitals scored the highest powerplay score of the season as they got 87 runs off just six overs. Shafali wouldn’t stop there and continued to play her shots.
Lanning put the finishing touches on the win as she hit the final boundary as the Capitals won by 10 wickets and reached the target of 106 runs in just 7.1 overs.
