June 23, 2013: MS Dhoni leads India to Champions Trophy glory, their last ICC title

Back on June 23, 2013, India won the Champions Trophy after beating hosts England by five runs in a rain-curtailed match at Edgbaston in Birmingham.

Rain threatened to play spoilsport, but in the end, the match was reduced to 20 overs per side. After being put in to bat first, the Men in Blue scored 129 for the loss of seven wickets in 20 overs. India were reduced to 66 for the loss of five wickets in 13 overs.

But a partnership of 47 runs between Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja helped India resurrect their innings. Kohli was their standout batter after he notched 43 runs off 34 balls with four fours and a six.

Jadeja stayed not out on 33 runs off 25 balls with two fours and as many sixes. Shikhar Dhawan also played a handy knock of 31 runs before Ravi Bopara accounted for his wicket. Bopara was also the pick of the bowlers for the hosts after he finished with figures of 4-1-20-3.

England found themselves in trouble with their score at 46 for four in 8.4 overs. From there on, Eoin Morgan and Bopara stitched together a partnership of 64 runs for the fifth wicket to put England on the driver’s seat.

The 18th over turned out to be the turning point as Ishant Sharma dismissed both set batters. Jadeja added to India’s delight by cleaning up Jos Buttler for a golden duck.

With England needing 15 runs to win off the last over, Ravi Ashwin held his nerve to take India past the finish line. MS Dhoni also became the first captain to win all three ICC trophies back then.

Since 2013, India advanced to the semi-finals and finals of several ICC tournaments, but a trophy has continued to elude them. Recently, India lost to Australia in the final of the World Test Championship (WTC) 2021-23 at Kennington Oval in London.
