A 41-year-old Indian-origin man died in the United States after he was allegedly hit on his head during an altercation.
According to a police report, the incident happened at nearly 2 am (US local time) on February 2, outside a restaurant in downtown Washington, making it the fifth case of an Indian American killed in the US this year.
The man was identified as Vivek Chander Taneja, who worked as an executive in Virginia. The incident came to light after officers responded to reports of an assault. Upon arrival, they found the man with critical injuries. He was rushed to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries on February 7.
The police also said Taneja’s death was ruled a ‘homicide’.
While no arrests were made in the case, the suspect was captured on a nearby CCTV camera. Later, the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch sought the public’s assistance in identifying and locating the suspect.
The police said they were offering a reward of up to $25,000 to anyone who provides information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for each homicide committed in the District of Columbia.
