Former South Africa captain AB de Villiers is set to be in India for the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, the former Royal Challengers Bangalore batter revealed that he will be in Mumbai for the first few weeks of the IPL 2024. De Villiers is set for a broadcasting gig in IPL.
De Villiers was with the broadcasting team in 2023 season as well. He has not participated in the IPL since 2021 despite the fans begging the player to come back. De Villiers further spoke about his chat with Virat Kohli and revealed that he might be up for a short coaching gig at the RCB in the 2024 season.
“Nothing confirmed yet, Virat has hinted that he might want me to come over and spend a bit of time with him and some of the batters,” said de Villiers on his YouTube channel.
“That call will come from Andy Flower, Faf and the team. For now, I’m just going to be in Mumbai for the first few weeks of the IPL. I’m doing a bit of commentating,” he added.
AB de Villiers is one of the most fiercest batters to ever play in the tournament history. The batter called time on his IPL career with 5162 runs in his name from 184 games. De Villiers was one of the star players of the Bengaluru-based franchise alongside Chris Gayle and Virat Kohli. Even at the twilight of his career, de Villiers was one of the most agile players in the field.
In November 2021, de Villiers announced retirement from all forms of the game. The batter had revealed that batting became difficult for him after he had an eye operation.
“I will go to Chinnaswamy Stadium next year. But not for playing cricket. I am going to apologize to the RCB fans for not winning the IPL title so far. I also want to thank them for their support over the past decade. I can’t play cricket anymore. Because I had surgery on my right eye,” de Villiers had said in 2022.
Since his retirement, de Villiers has focused on his YouTube channel where he analyses cricket matches.
