CSK vs LSG: Ruturaj Gaikwad becomes 1st Chennai skipper to score IPL hundred

Ruturaj Gaikwad created history on Tuesday, April 23, as he became the first CSK skipper to score a hundred in the IPL as reached the landmark during the clash against LSG in Chennai.

Ruturaj led from the front on the day as the other CSK batters struggled to get going on the night. The CSK skipper was looking for a big score this season and was able to get it infront of the passionate Chennai crowd at Chepauk.

On a special day for CSK, as it was the anniversary of their first IPL game at Chepauk, LSG had won the toss and opted to bowl first. CSK would lose Ajinkya Rahane early before Daryl Mitchell, who had come in for Rachin Ravindra, joined Ruturaj in the middle. The duo put on 45 runs for the second wicket before Mitchell fell to Yash Thakur. The CSK skipper would steady things with Ravindra Jadeja, who also struggled to find momentum.

Ruturaj would then take the onus on himself to accelerate the innings as he reached his fifty in 28 balls. After getting to fifty, Gaikwad batted smartly and was able to get a boundary in the next few overs to keep the momentum going.

He would then shift gears once Jadeja fell for 16 off 19 balls. Gaikwad broke free after a bit of a lull period with a big six off Marcus Stoinis and kept running brilliantly between the wickets as well. The CSK skipper would move into the 90s with a six off Mohsin Khan. Another six off Yash Thakur got him to 99 and hit a boundary to reach the landmark.

Gaikwad would reach his hundred in 56 balls and his innings consisted of 11 boundaries and 3 sixes. The CSK skipper would remain unbeaten on 108 off 60 balls as CSK scored 210 in their 20 overs.

Apart from becoming the first CSK skipper to score a hundred, Ruturaj also became the Chennai batter with the most 50-plus scores, going past Faf du Plessis’ record of 16. Ruturaj would also move into the second spot in the Orange Cap standings behind Virat Kohli as he went past SRH’s Travis Head.

This is his second IPL hundred after having got the first one during the 2021 season for CSK.
