Former Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi issued a clarification about his remarks on the recent terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district after facing criticism from BJP leaders.

He said the Centre exploits such terror attacks for political gain. Taking to X, he wrote, “Recently, my statement regarding this incident was published in newspapers, where I emphasised that whenever such incidents occur, the government often tries to exploit them for political gain.”

“I only criticised this mentality of the ruling party in my statement,” he clarified.

“I always bow my head in reverence to the martyrdom of our army soldiers. The army has consistently done a tremendous job safeguarding our borders from enemies. A few days ago, militants attacked a convoy of Indian Air Force soldiers in District Poonch (J&K), resulting in the martyrdom of a soldier. I pay my respects to the memory of the fallen soldier,” he said.

Channi on Sunday alleged that the attack was “pre-planned” and such “stuntbaazi” was done by the BJP to win polls.

After Channi’s remarks, several BJP leaders and leaders from the Congress party demanded an apology.

One Indian Air Force (IAF) soldier was killed while four others were injured after their convoy was fired upon by terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district on Saturday, officials said. The attack occurred at Sanai village in Surankote.
