Rain in Delhi this week, southwest monsoon advances into Gujarat, Maharashtra
After battling days of deadly heatwave, Delhi is now likely to see drizzle to light rain till June 29, making for a wet end to the month.
A fresh bout of rain lashed parts of the national capital on Sunday afternoon, bringing respite to the people reeling under heatwave for the past two months. “Generally cloudy sky, thunderstorms with very light rain accompanied by gusty winds in Delhi,” the weather department said.
The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to hover around 40 and 30 degrees Celsius respectively, it added. Earlier, the weather department said that the monsoon is expected to hit Delhi-NCR around June 30.
SOUTHWEST MONSOON ADVANCES
The southwest monsoon on Sunday advanced further into Gujarat, after making no progress for several days, following its early onset in parts of south Gujarat on June 11.
Conditions remain favourable for the monsoon to cover some more parts of Gujarat and the adjoining north Arabian Sea in the next 3-4 days, the IMD said in its forecast.
“The southwest monsoon has advanced into some more parts of Arabian Sea, Gujarat state; remaining parts of Maharashtra; some more parts of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh; remaining parts of Odisha and some parts of Jharkhand,” the IMD said in its weather bulletin.
The southwest monsoon typically enters Gujarat on June 15 and progresses to Ahmedabad and other parts of the state, including some areas of Saurashtra, by June 20. It covers most parts of Saurashtra by June 25 and the entire state by June 30, said officials.
Parts of the Saurashtra region, including Junagadh, Gir Somnath, Botad, Bhavnagar and Amreli districts, and south Gujarat districts of Valsad, Navsari and Surat received light rain on Sunday, the State Emergency Operation Centre data showed.
The IMD has predicted light to moderate rain and thundershowers in all the districts of Gujarat next week.
“Isolated heavy to very heavy rain very likely over Konkan & Goa, Ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra, Karnataka during next 5 days; over Gujarat Region on 23rd & 24th; over ghat areas of Tamil Nadu on 23rd; Kerala & Mahe during 23rd-25th and isolated heavy rainfall over Marathwada on 23rd, Saurashtra & Kutch, Lakshadweep on 23rd & 24th; Gujarat Region on 25th; Tamil Nadu on 24th & 25th; Kerala & Mahe on 26th & 27th and over Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam during 25th -27th June,” IMD said.
The weather department has also issued red alerts for South Interior Karnataka, Konkan and Goa, and coastal Karnataka. An orange alert has also been issued for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Madhya Pradesh, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim.
