4th seed and French Open 2024 finalist Alexander Zverev was knocked out in the 4th round of Wimbledon 2024 on July 8 as America’s Taylor Fritz pulled off an incredible comeback to win the game at Centre Court.

Fritz came back from 2 sets down to beat Zverev 4-6, 6-7, 6-4, 7-6, 6-3 to progress to the quarterfinals of the Wimbledon for the second time in his career.

Zverev had been struggling with a left knee issue throughout the match and it would come back to haunt him in the end as Fritz made sure there were two Americans in the final 8 stage. The tone for the match was set in the very first set as both men went toe to toe with Fritz taking a lead for a brief time before Zverev was able to hold and make it 3-3. Fritz retook the lead, only for Zverev to make it 4-4 and then set himself up for serving for the set. He was able to take it, but his knee was giving him some issues as the second set was all level at 2-2. It continued to be a back and forth between both men and the game eventually went into a tie-breaker.

Zverev was able to deliver a forehand on to the baseline and took a mini-break in the tie-breaker to make it 3-1. He would quickly make it 6-2 before Fritz was able to pull one back. However, the German made the lead 2-0 and it looked like the American was staring down the barrel.

Fritz would comeback strongly in the third set and had a break point. However, Zverev didn’t allow him to take the advantage at that time, and took a lead of 4-3.

However, Fritz would earn 2 break points which would allow him to serve for the third set and ultimately take it 6-4.

Zverev would start the fourth set with a strong service and it continued to be his strong point in the set as he took a 3-2 lead. However, Fritz would start to match Zverev blow for blow and his own service started to be menacing for his opponent.

Zverev seemed to be close to a win, but Fritz came back strongly and pushed the game into a tie-breaker. The American quickly would break and race to a 3-0 lead, before making it 6-1 with an overhead shot. He would then push the match into the decider, where Zverev struggled to put up a big fight.

While there were moments in which the German showed resilience, it wasn’t enough in the end as Fritz progressed to the quarters and will face Musetti in the next round.
