The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for Delhi-NCR (National Capital Region) as heavy rain lashed the city on Wednesday evening.
The sudden showers caused waterlogging in many areas of the city, affecting traffic movement and pedestrians. As per the latest forecast, moderate to heavy rain is likely in the coming hours in Delhi, Noida, Gurgaon and Ghaziabad. The wind speed is expected to be 30-50 km/h. The red alert has been issued till 9 pm.
“Moderate rainfall accompanied by moderate thunderstorms and lightning is likely to occur at North Delhi, Central-Delhi, New Delhi, South Delhi, South-East Delhi, East Delhi, NCR in the next two hours,” the Indian Meteorological Centre (IMD) said in the evening.
Apart from Delhi-NCR, nearby areas including Panipat, Bhiwani, Jhajjar, Jind, Hisar, Karnal, Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, Bijnor, Nuh, Rewari, Alwar, Narnaul, Palwal, Hodal, Hathin, Aligarh, Bulandshahr, and Mathura are also likely to see showers.
RAIN LASHES DELHI, WATERLOGGING IN MANY AREAS
Heavy rain caused waterlogging in many areas of the Delhi-NCR region, affecting traffic on several roads. Visuals shared on social media show waterlogging in Rajendra Nagar, where three IAS aspirants drowned three days ago in basement flooding amid rain.
Other areas include RK Puram, Janpath, Parliament Street, Karol Bagh, Nauroji Nagar, Pant Marg, Mayur Vihar among other locations. In Noida, waterlogging was reported in areas including Gaur City, Film City and many underpasses on the Delhi-Noida Expressway.
The weather department has predicted the rainy weather to continue till August 5.
