Sandip Ghosh, ex-principal of Kolkata’s RG Kar hospital, arrested by CBI

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday arrested Sandip Ghosh.

The former principal of government-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital where a 31-year-old trainee doctor was raped and murdered last month.

According to officials, Ghosh has been arrested by the central probe agency for his alleged involvement in the financial irregularities in RG Kar hospital. The former principal was arrested late in the evening after the CBI grilled him for over two weeks.

The CBI also subjected Sandip Ghosh to undergo a polygraphy test.

The CBI has slapped criminal conspiracy, cheating, and dishonesty along with Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act in connection with the financial misconduct at RG Kar Medical College. The cases account for cognisable offences and are non-bailable in nature.

The FIR was registered after the central probe agency took over the investigation from Kolkata Police’s Special Investigation Team (SIT) on the directions of the Calcutta High Court.

Ghosh served as the principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital from February 2021 to September 2023. Despite being transferred in October 2023, he unexpectedly returned to his role at the hospital within a month.

He continued on the post until the day when the trainee doctor was brutally raped and murdered inside a seminar hall of the hospital. Her semi-nude body was found on August 9, sparking nationwide protests and a series of violence in West Bengal.

Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police, was arrested in connection with the brutal rape-murder.

Additionally, Sandip Ghosh has also been summoned by Kolkata Police for disclosing the identity of the trainee doctor who was raped and murdered.

Even the Indian Medical Association has suspended the membership of Dr Sandip Ghosh after the disciplinary committee of the medical body took note of the trainee doctor’s rape and murder.
