A BJP-backed Sikh group held protest against Congress MP Rahul Gandhi outside his residence in Delhi over his statement on the conditions of the Sikh community in India. The agitators attempted to break police barricades at Janpath road.

This comes after Rahul Gandhi made a remark on religious freedom in the country. Gandhi, who is on four-day visit to US, addressed a gathering of several hundred Indian Americans in Herndon, a Virginia suburb of Washington DC, on Monday.

“The fight is about whether a Sikh is going to be allowed to wear his turban in India or a kada in India. Or he, as a Sikh, is going to be able to go to gurdwara. That’s what the fight is about. And not just for him, for all religions,” Gandhi said.

The remark has drawn a sharp reaction from the BJP, who accused Gandhi of trying to create a “dangerous narrative” by speaking on “sensitive issues” abroad.

The BJP-backed Sikh group protested outside his residence in Delhi today.

The agitators held placards saying “Why does Rahul Gandhi defame Sikhs after going abroad? shame on you, shame on you”.
