Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the death of legendary singer Sharda Sinha, remembering her contribution to the Maithili and Bhojpuri folk music.
Sharda Sinha, 72, died on Tuesday, which also happened to be the first day of four-day Chhath Puja. The Padma Bhushan recipient was admitted to AIIMS in Delhi on October 27. “I am deeply saddened by the demise of renowned folk singer Sharda Sinha ji. Her Maithili and Bhojpuri folk songs have been very popular for the last several decades.
The echo of her melodious songs associated with the great festival of faith, Chhath, will always remain. Her demise is an irreparable loss for the music world. My condolences are with her family and fans in this hour of grief,” PM Modi said in a post on X.
Sharda Sinha had been fighting multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer, since 2018. The legendary singer’s last song was released on Monday, a day before the beginning of four-day Chhath Puja.
Sharda Sinha, who is referred to as ‘Bihar Kokila’, was instrumental in bringing Bihar’s traditional music to a wider audience. Among her most popular songs are Kelwa Ke Paat Par Ugalan Suraj Mal Jhake Jhuke, Hey Chhathi Maiya, Ho Dinanath, Bahangi Lachakat Jaaye, Roje Roje Ugelaa, Suna Chhathi Maai, Jode Jode Supawa, and Patna Ke Ghat Par.
She was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2018.
