President Vladimir Putin has expressed his readiness to engage in discussions with US President-elect Donald Trump, though he made it clear that Russia’s objectives in Ukraine remain unchanged.
In a statement released on Friday, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov clarified that while Russia is open to dialogue, it is premature to expect a shift in Moscow’s position on Ukraine. Putin had previously congratulated Trump on his election victory, praising the Republican for his courage in the face of an assassination attempt during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania in July 2020.
The Russian leader referred to Trump’s actions during the attack as “correct and courageous,” calling him “a real man.” In his comments, Putin emphasized that while Russia is ready for talks, the primary goals regarding Ukraine will not alter.
Regarding a potential phone call between the two leaders, Peskov noted that no specific plans had been made yet, and he cautioned against assuming an immediate improvement in US-Russia relations.
Putin, however, reiterated his willingness to engage in conversation, as he has done previously. Despite the diplomatic opening, Russia’s stance on Ukraine and other geopolitical issues remains firm, signaling that dialogue would not necessarily translate into any concessions.
