India’s G20 leadership inspiration for us, Brazil President told PM Modi: Sources

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, during a bilateral meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, acknowledged India’s exemplary.

Leadership during its G20 Presidency in 2023, sources said. He revealed that many initiatives and approaches adopted by Brazil for this year’s G20 Summit were inspired by India’s successful hosting of the global forum last September, sources further stated.

“Held talks with President Lula during the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro. Complimented him on various efforts of Brazil during their G20 Presidency. We took stock of the full range of bilateral ties between our nations and reaffirmed our commitment to improving cooperation in sectors like energy, biofuels, defence, agriculture and more,” PM Modi said while sharing an image of the two leaders hugging each other.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Brazil on Monday following a productive visit to Nigeria. Upon his arrival in Rio de Janeiro, he was warmly welcomed by the Indian community with Sanskrit chants.

PM Modi interacted with outgoing US President Joe Biden on Tuesday, and shared a picture on his X handle. Videos also showed the two leaders seated together. Furthermore, the Indian Prime Minister held several bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the summit.

He held bilateral meetings with Keir Starmer and Jonas Gahr Store, the Prime Ministers of the UK and Norway and French President Emmanuel Macron.

This marks PM Modi’s third visit to Brazil, following the BRICS Summits in 2014 and 2019. Last year, India hosted a landmark G20 Summit in New Delhi, where it achieved a significant diplomatic feat by fostering consensus among global leaders to address the Russia-Ukraine war in the New Delhi Declaration.

The theme for this year’s G20 Summit under Brazil’s presidency is ‘Building a Just World and a Sustainable Planet’, with a focus on social inclusion, poverty reduction, sustainable development, and reforms in global governance.

Continuing from the priorities India outlined last year, PM Modi said before his departure from Niegria, “This year, Brazil has built upon India’s legacy. I look forward to meaningful discussions in keeping with our vision of ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future.’ I will also use the opportunity to exchange views on furthering bilateral cooperation with several other leaders.”

Following his participation in the Brazil G20 Summit, PM Modi will travel to Guyana from November 19 to 21 at the invitation of President Mohamed Irfaan Ali. This visit will make him the first Indian Prime Minister to visit Guyana in over 50 years.
