Mumbai: Speedboat rams ferry near Gateway of India, 2 dead, 75 rescued

A boat carrying 80 passengers and five crew members capsized on Wednesday off the Mumbai coast, leaving two people dead and many missing.

While 75 people have been rescued, the search is still on for a dozen others, news agency PTI reported. The incident happened when the boat, named Neelkamal, was ferrying passengers from Elephanta caves to the Gateway of India.

Video footage from the scene shows passengers wearing life jackets being rescued and transferred to another ferry as chaos unfolded.

A large-scale rescue operation is underway, with the Navy and Coast Guard leading the efforts. Eleven Navy boats, three Marine Police vessels, and a Coast Guard boat have been deployed for the mission. Additionally, four helicopters, resources from the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority, and local fishermen are assisting in the operation.

Authorities are continuing rescue operations.
