West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose on Friday said that the Kolkata hospital where a trainee doctor was brutally raped and murdered has become a “school of scandals”.
Governor Ananda Bose said, “I have received a lot of complaints about the things happening in the hospital. RG Kar Medical College and Hospital has become a school of scandals. What we see is the tip of the iceberg.”
Governor Bose’s comments came a day after the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where a post-graduate trainee doctor was raped and murdered on August 9, was vandalised by miscreants during an all-night demonstration called in protest against the crime.
Governor Ananda Bose claimed that the West Bengal government failed to act when it was required.
Stating that he had written a lengthy letter to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee without receiving a response, the Governor said, “I have already written a lengthy letter to the Chief Minister after the incident which took place at the KG Kar Hospital and suggested to her the action that needs to be taken and also demanded a report from her under Article 167 of the Constitution. Notably, in the last 5 years, I have sent 30 such letters to which no replies were given. This is unconstitutional.”
When asked about his views on the police investigation in the case, Bose said that he had already indicated his displeasure with the current police hierarchy in Kolkata.
Meanwhile, Kolkata Police on Friday said it has so far arrested 19 people in connection with the vandalism and violence at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Those arrested were remanded to police custody by a city court till August 22, officials said.
According to the police, a group of 40 to 50 people, under the garb of protestors, broke into the hospital premises late on Wednesday night and vandalised property.
In other news, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has announced a 24-hour strike against vandalism at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital and the rape and murder of the 32-year-old trainee doctor.
Meanwhile, resident doctors at the hospital are continuing with their indefinite strike to express solidarity with the nationwide agitation against the rape and murder of the post-graduate trainee.
