Heavy rain is expected to continue across northern India and other parts of the country, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing an orange alert for multiple states.
Metro cities like Delhi and Mumbai, which experienced fresh rain on Saturday morning, will continue to receive more showers. The active southwest monsoon has brought heavy rain to the western coast, including the western Himalayan region and many parts of central India.
An orange alert has been issued in Odisha, coastal Karnataka, Kerala and Mahé, central Maharashtra, Gujarat, Saurashtra and Kutch, Konkan and Goa, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura. Heavy rain is expected in these states between July 13 and 14.
In north India, Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, East Rajasthan are expected to see varying levels of rain in the coming days. Heavy rain has been recorded in many parts of the country in the past 24 hours.
Rain to continue in Delhi
On Saturday morning, rain in the national capital provided relief from the humid weather and brought the temperature further down. Showers are likely to continue in Delhi and the National Capital Region.
Roads closed in Himachal Pradesh
As rain continued to lash Himachal Pradesh, 15 roads — eight in Mandi, four in Shimla, and three in Kangra district — have been shut. As many as 47 transformers were disrupted, according to the state emergency operations centre.
A yellow alert has been sounded in Himachal in view of thunderstorms and lightning at isolated places for the next six days till July 19.
Bihar on alert as river levels rise
The Bihar government directed district administrations to remain alert as water levels of several rivers rose following relentless rainfall in the last two to three days. The officials have been instructed to “remain alert and fully prepared to tackle the situation if the water level increases further”.
Almost all rivers have seen a rise in water levels, inundating low-lying localities. The situation appeared critical in East Champaran, Gopalganj, and West Champaran districts.
Assam flood affects 12 lakh, 7 deaths in 24 hours
The flood situation in Assam continued to be grim, with seven deaths reported in the last 24 hours. Over 12 lakh people in 24 districts have been affected by the inundation as the Brahmaputra and three other major rivers are flowing above the danger level in different parts of the state, officials said.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the overall situation was improving, with waters receding in most parts.
UP flood hits over 700 villages
More than 700 villages in Uttar Pradesh were affected by floods as rivers continued to flow over danger levels, officials said. At least 11 people have died in rain-related incidents in the state in the last 24 hours. Six people drowned, while lightning and snakebite killed two each.
