Climate Change: India expressed concern about tourism in Antarctica, said- there is a need to control tourism in the icy continent

“This icy expanse is not just a frozen desert but it is a dynamic, living laboratory, providing us with space to protect and study,” Earth Sciences Minister Kiren Rijiju said at the inauguration of the 46th Antarctica Treaty Consultative Meeting (ATCM) here. “Demands the highest commitment.”

Considered as the parliament for Antarctica, the ATCM is the highest forum for overseeing the icy continent with participation from 56 countries. Of these, 29 countries have got consultative status. This status comes with decision-making powers.

The ATCM takes all decisions by consensus. In the ongoing ATCM, a separate working group has been formed to prepare a framework for the regulation of tourism in Antarctica.
