Earthquake of magnitude 5.7 strikes Panama-Costa Rica border region

An earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale struck the border region between Panama and Costa Rica on Monday, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ).

The quake’s depth was reported at 10 kilometres. There are currently no reports of damage or injuries. Authorities in both Panama and Costa Rica are monitoring the situation and have urged residents to remain calm.

“Our response units are in different parts of the province of Chiriqui conducting monitoring, after the strong seismic movement recorded in the region,” Panama’s National Civil Protection System said on X.

The epicentre was located about 7 km southeast of the town of Puerto Armuelles, in the border region between the two Central American nations, according to the Institute of Geosciences of the University of Panama.
