Father’s Day card is my limit: Rishi Sunak’s put-down after Boris Johnson nominates dad for knighthood
United Kingdom Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said he was not keen on according a knighthood to his father and that merely a ‘Father’s Day card’ would suffice.
Sunak’s comment came after reports stating that former UK PM Boris Johnson had nominated his father, Stanley Johnson, for a knighthood.
“For me, a big success is remembering to get my dad a card on Father’s Day, so that is probably about my limit,” Sunak told reporters on Friday, in a thinly veiled swipe at Boris Johnson’s preference for his father on the honour list.
Sunak further said, “There is always comment and speculation about the honour’s lists beforehand. I do not see these things until I see them, so it is hard for me to say any more than that.”
Outgoing UK prime ministers are authorised to submit an honour list of names to be awarded knighthoods, and peerages, amongst other honours. The nominations undergo approval from the sitting premier and a panel to select candidates accordingly.
As per reports, Boris Johnson’s list exceeds 100 names, which includes his father’s. Stanley Johnson has served the European Parliament and has been a UK political figure for years.
He hit controversy in 2021 after senior MP Caroline Nokes and the media accused him of touching them at a conference.
