The preliminary investigation into the death of IPS officer and Coimbatore DIG C Vijayakumar revealed that the top cop had used his gunman’s weapon to kill himself.
It further stated that he had been taking pills for insomnia since January. The First Information Report (FIR) on the death of Coimbatore DIG C Vijayakumar IPS stated that a case under CrPC 174 for investigation over his suicide had been registered.
The report based on the complaint by Grade-I constable gunman, U Ravichandran, mentioned that Vijayakumar had complained of sleeplessness since his posting in January and he was taking sleeping pills.
“DIG Vijayakumar came to the DSR (Daily Status Report) room at around 6.30 am on Friday, which was 30 minutes earlier than his usual routine to read the DSR copies. He then asked police guard Ravivarma for a cup of milk and he drank it. He entered my room at around 6.40 am and asked for a DSR report,” said Ravichandran in the report.
“Vijayakumar saw his gun and asked him how to operate it. The DIG had left the room with the gun. And before I could wear my t-shirt and follow him, I heard a gunshot and when rushed out, I saw Vijayakumar lying on the floor, in a pool of blood, with the pistol next to him,” Ravinchandran recounted the incident in the report.
“Upon hearing the gun shot, camp office driver Anbazhagan also rushed to the spot. DIG Vijayakumar was taken to Coimbatore government hospital where he was declared brought dead,” his report read.
Vijayakumar shot himself with a pistol at his residence at Red Fields in Coimbatore on Friday morning, a senior police officer said.
His wife and his daughter, along with the help of some police personnel, rushed him to a nearby hospital where he was declared ‘brought dead’.
