American boxing legend George Foreman passed away at the age of 76 on Friday, March 21. His family confirmed the news via his social media account.
Foreman made a name for himself at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, where he won the heavyweight gold medal at just 19 years old, in only his 25th amateur fight. After turning professional, Foreman won 37 consecutive matches before facing reigning champion Joe Frazier in Kingston, Jamaica. He defeated Frazier by technical knockout after two rounds. Foreman is best known for the legendary “Rumble in the Jungle” in 1974, where he lost his first title to the iconic Muhammad Ali.
Foreman successfully defended his title twice more before facing Muhammad Ali in Kinshasa, Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo), in what became one of the most iconic matches in boxing history.
Following his death, Foreman’s family took to Instagram to honour him, praising his devotion to his family and his respect in the boxing world.
“Our hearts are broken. With profound sorrow, we announce the passing of our beloved George Edward Foreman Sr., who peacefully departed on March 21, 2025 surrounded by loved ones. A devout preacher, a devoted husband, a loving father, and a proud grand and great grandfather, he lived a life marked by unwavering faith, humility, and purpose,” Foreman’s family wrote on Instagram.
“A humanitarian, an Olympian, and two time heavyweight champion of the world, He was deeply respected — a force for good, a man of discipline, conviction, and a protector of his legacy, fighting tirelessly to preserve his good name— for his family.
“We are grateful for the outpouring of love and prayers, and kindly ask for privacy as we honour the extraordinary life of a man we were blessed to call our own.”
After retiring in the 1990s, Foreman became a passionate spokesperson for a variety of products, with his most notable endorsement being the electric grill from home appliance brand Salton Inc. Foreman finished his career with a professional record of 76 wins and five losses, having last played in 1997.
