Manchester United suffered a dreadful 0-3 defeat against Sevilla in the second leg of the quarter-final to crash out of the Europa League on Thursday.

Sevilla striker Youssef En Nesyri’s brace came from the mistakes of Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea and Harry Maguire. Loic Bade, too, added to United’s miseries as Sevilla secured a 5-2 aggregate win to storm into the semi-finals of their favourite competition.

The Europa Kings Sevilla were dominant with their high pressing, while United, who conceded two own goals to draw the first leg at Old Trafford, were nowhere near to pose any threat at the Sanchez Pizjuan stadium.

Sevilla opened their scoreline in only eight minutes as United custodian De Gea delivered a hospital pass to Maguire, who was challenged by Erik Lamela and En Nesyri scooped up the loose ball to net from close range.

Although Sevilla missed out on a few chances and Lucas Ocampos’ goal was ruled out by VAR for being offside, Sevilla continued to entertain their home crowd. United brought in Marcus Rashford and Luke Shaw as halftime substitutes, but Loic Bade doubled Sevilla’s lead with his towering header from a corner which went in off the crossbar in the 47th minute.

En Nesyri added another to United’s embarrassment in the 81st minute, when goalkeeper De Gea failed to deal with a long ball over the top and En Nesyri finished well to take Sevilla closer to a record-extending seventh victory in the competition. Sevilla will face Juventus in the semi-finals.

“We have to do better, that’s the demand,” United manager Erik ten Hag told BT Sport. “We were not composed, not calm. We didn’t beat the press, when you do there are so many spaces behind, and it was obvious at the start how to do it.

“We lost the battles, they had more passion, more desire, more willingness. This was a great opportunity, a great occasion, to win something and we gave it away – we have to blame ourselves. It’s gone, we can’t change it.”
