Several parts of Tamil Nadu continued to witness heavy rainfall as the northeast monsoon intensified in the region.

Landslides were reported from multiple locations, along with widespread flooding. At least 12 districts in the state are likely to experience heavy rain with thundershowers on Friday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

In view of the prevailing situation, a holiday was declared for schools in two districts. Schools in Thiruvarur district and Karaikkal in Puducherry will remain closed from today.

The IMD in Chennai has predicted that heavy rain is likely in areas like Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Pudukottai, Sivagangai, Ramanathapuram, Virudhunagar, Thoothukudi, Thenkasi, Tirunelveli and Kanniyakumari, the Regional Meteorological Centre said.

TRAINS CANCELLED

Due to a landslide and fallen trees on the track between Kallar and Coonoor sections of the Nilgiri Mountain Railway, the Railways have cancelled two services until November 16.

Officials have informed that the passenger special trains, 06136 and 06137, running from Mettupalayam to Udagamandalam and vice-versa, were cancelled from November 10 to November 16.

On Thursday, severe waterlogging occurred in several cities, including Madurai, Coimbatore and Thoothukudi. Landslides occurred on the road near Kunjappa-Panai in Coimbatore and on the Mettupalayam highway in the Kotagiri Mettupalayam region.

Schools were shut in Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Madurai, Theni and Dindigul districts on Thursday.

According to the weather forecast, a cyclonic circulation over the Comorin area and strong easterly/northeasterly winds, along with a low-pressure area over the east-central Arabian Sea are the key factors for the intense rainfall in the state.
