India’s Nitu Ghanghas defeated Mongolia’s Lutsaikhan Altantsetseg in the finals to win the gold medal in the 48kg category of the IBA Women’s Boxing World Championship 2023.

She won 5-0 after a unanimous decision. It happened to be India’s first gold in the ongoing tournament.

Nitu, who was playing her maiden final at the World Championships, started the match with an attacking approach while her opponent didn’t get carried away. The Mongolian pulled off a few punches, but it was the Indian boxer who dominated in the first round.

Lutsaikhan managed to land a punch after missing quite a few, but Nitu didn’t give up on her aggressive approach. After the first two rounds, it was Nitu who was in the lead.

Both Nitu and Lutsaikhan received one yellow card. In the last 30 seconds, Nitu churned out two punches and that sealed the fate of the match.

Ghanghas started her campaign in the tournament by defeating Korea’s Kang Doyeon in the first round. Thereafter, the 22-year-old defeated Tajikistan’s Qosimova Sumaiya in the second round.

The youngster eased past Japan’s Wada Madoka in the quarterfinal. Her biggest victory came in the semi-final when she defeated Kazakhstan’s Alua Belkibekova 5-2.

Belkibekova happens to be a two-time Asian Champion and gave Ghanghas quite a bit of trouble, but the Indian wrestler came up trumps in the crunch encounter.

Later in the day, Saweety Boora will lock horns with Lina Wang of China in the final of the 81kg category. Nikhat Zareen and Lovlina Borgohain will also be in action in their finals on Sunday, March 26.
