Matthew Ebden and Rohan Bopanna failed to make their way through to the quarters in the men’s doubles at the Italian Open 2024. On Tuesday, May 16, the Indo-Australian pair lost 2-6, 4-6 to the Italian duo of Simone Boleli and Andrea Vavassori at Pietrangeli.
Ebden and Bopanna could not find any momentum, both with their first and second serves. A win percentage of 47 from their first serves showed how indifferent they were. The duo conceded 5 break points and that turned out to be a crucial factor in the context of the game.
As far as Boleli and Vavassori are concerned, they will next be up against Wesley Koolhof and Nikola Mektic in the quarterfinals on Thursday, May 16.
Bopanna, Ebden’s recent performances
They made an impressive start after beating the duo of Francesco Passaro and Matteo Arnaldi 6-2, 6-2 in the Round of 32, but failed to carry the momentum against Boleli and Vavassori.
After winning the Australian Open in January at the Rod Laver Arena, Bopanna and Ebden got their hands on the Miami Open trophy, where they defeated Ivan Dodig and Austin Krajicek in the final. They also progressed to the quarterfinals of the Dubai Tennis Championships.
But they faltered in the Indian Wells Masters, Monte Carlo Masters and Madrid Open. Bopanna became the No.1 ranked doubles player after his Australian Open heist, but has dropped to No.4.
Expectations will also be high when they take part in the French Open, which is scheduled to take place from May 20 to June 9.
