Luciano Spalletti, the 64-year-old former coach of Napoli, has been appointed as the new head coach of Italy’s national team, according to the country’s football federation.

Spalletti’s appointment comes after the resignation of Roberto Mancini on August 13.

Having led Napoli to their first Serie A title in 33 years last season, Spalletti brings with him a wealth of experience from his previous managerial roles at AS Roma, Inter Milan, and Zenit St Petersburg in Russia. Following his departure from Napoli in May, he expressed his desire for a sabbatical, and subsequently, Rudi Garcia was appointed as the new coach of the reigning Serie A champions.

The Italian Football Federation officially announced Spalletti’s appointment on their website, with him set to take up the position from September 1. While the duration of his contract was not specified in the federation’s statement, a source informed Reuters that the contract will extend until the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

FIGC President Gabriele Gravina welcomed Spalletti and said that his enthusiasm and expertise would be fundamental for the challenges that await the national team in the coming months.

“Let’s welcome Spalletti” declared the FIGC President Gabriele Gravina -, the national team needed a great coach and I’m very happy that he accepted the technical guidance of the Azzurri. His enthusiasm and his expertise will be fundamental for the challenges that await Italy in the coming months.”

Spalletti will become the ninth coach of the national team in this century. His first match in charge will be against North Macedonia during Italy’s 2024 European Championship qualifier on September 9. Three days later, the Azzurri will host Ukraine.

Italy currently holds the third position in Group C with three points from two matches, trailing Ukraine who has six points from three games. Meanwhile, England leads the group with 12 points from four matches.
