Under pressure Jannik Sinner dominated the US Open men’s singles final to win the second Grand Slam of his career.

Sinner beat Taylor Fritz in straight sets to get his hands on first-ever US Open title. The player had been reeling under a lot of pressure coming into the Grand Slam due to his doping controversy.

After winning the US Open title, Sinner expressed relief and thanked his team for constant support in difficult times. The tennis world had been divided since the day Sinner was allowed to play the game despite testing positive twice for using the banned substance clostebol.

When the news had broken out, Sinner was quick to address the issue stating that he was unknowingly contaminated through his physiotherapist, Giacomo Naldi, who had applied a commercially available spray containing clostebol to a cut on his hand and then massaged Sinner without wearing gloves.

“This title means so much for me. The last period of my career was really not easy. I have my team supports me every day. The people who are close to me. I love tennis. I practice a lot for these kind of stages,” Sinner said after winning the US Open title.

After the win, Sinner said that he knew that his style of playing tennis was suited for the courts in USA. On the day, the Italian blew away Fritz 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 in just 2 hours and 16 minutes to clinch the title.

“It’s also a relief. You work for these kind of trophies. You work to play big matches on big stages. I’m so happy I can take this one home with me. I had very tough losses here. Against Carlos with match point. Last year against Zverev. I always knew this court could suit me very well. I just tried to keep going and improving. The work hasn’t stopped. We are gonna take this one with us and we’re gonna celebrate tonight,” he said.

Title win without expectations

Coming into the tournament, Sinner had said that he had no expectations from the US Open due to the amount of storms in his life. The player laughed about the same after his victory.

“I did pretty well I guess? We just went day by day. Trying to practice well in the days off. Believing in ourself which is more important. I understood how important the mental part is in this sport. I’m very happy and proud to share this with my team. I know there are a lot of people watching from home. But I’d like to thank everyone for being so fair in this amazing arena. It was a huge pleasure,” concluded Sinner.
