Non-Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) chief has alleged that Russia has been preparing to launch an offensive at NATO’s submarine cables in the European Union.
The bloc’s assistant secretary general for intelligence and security, David Cutler, said that Russia is mapping critical allied infrastructure both on land and underwater.
“This is how Moscow is preparing for strikes against submarine targets in Europe and North America. Russian military and special services take part in the operation,” he claimed.
“Russia is preparing for an attack on NATO’s submarine infrastructure. For this purpose, the Russian leadership is studying the alliance’s underwater systems”, David Cutler was quoted as saying by Bloomberg.
Cutler claimed that this is how Russia fights in the early stages of the conflict, where it aims to destroy critical infrastructure.
He said that it is about submarine cables, which account for 95 per cent of internet communications. They allow for about 10 trillion dollars worth of financial transactions every day.
Amid the concern of NATO, Russian authorities on Wednesday accused Ukraine of attempting to attack the Kremlin with two drones overnight in an effort to assassinate President Vladimir Putin. After the attack bid, the Russian parliament called for a retaliatory missile attack on the residence of Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
State Duma deputy from the Crimean region Mikhail Sheremet, in response to an attempted drone attack on the Kremlin, called for a missile strike on the residence of Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv.
Meanwhile, Russia launched one of its deadliest attacks on Kherson, hitting a supermarket, a railway station and other civilian targets. At least 21 people were killed and 48 injured in the attack, reported a local media outlet, Kyiv Post.
