Another earthquake of magnitude 6.0 jolted Turkey on Monday, amounting to the third tremblor recorded in the last 24 hours.
The tremor was recorded following a quake of magnitude 7.6 and a massive earthquake of 7.8 magnitude on Monday. The tremors hit southeastern Turkey and northern Syria early Monday, killing over 1,800 people and injuring thousands of others.
At least 1,042 people died in Turkey from a 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck early Monday, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said. In Syria, at least 783 people were killed by the quake. The calamity has been termed one of the most powerful tremors in nearly a century.
Turkish President Erdogan called Monday’s pre-dawn earthquake “the biggest disaster” the country has experienced in the last century.
The disaster, which has claimed more than 1800 lives so far, called for assistance from other countries. India has decided to send search and rescue teams along with medical aid and relief materials.
Two teams of NDRF comprising 100 personnel with specially trained dog squads and necessary equipment are ready to be flown to the earthquake-hit area for search and rescue operations, the PMO said in a press release.
Also, the European Union said it was sending rescue teams to Turkey after the stricken country requested EU assistance.
The UK stands ready to help in whatever way we can,” British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak tweeted, saying his thoughts were with the people of Turkey and Syria.
