This incident would have sent shivers down our spines had it happened anywhere in the world.

However, it happened in the national capital Delhi. A predator who, believe it or balk, was also a lover to a 26-year-old woman, killed her, chopped her into 35 pieces and scattered the body parts across Delhi.

Five months after he committed the barbaric act, the man has been held.

Police identified the accused as Aftab Amin Poonawalla. He had been in a live-in relationship with the victim, 26-year-old Shraddha. During questioning, Poonawalla revealed that Shraddha had been pressuring him to get married. They would frequently quarrel about it.

Following an argument on May 18, Poonawalla strangled his partner. He then dismembered her body with a sharp weapon and bought a fridge to store the chopped up parts. Over the next 16 days, he would go out in the dead of night and dispose of the pieces at various locations around Delhi.

The victim’s father, Vikas Madan, had lodged an FIR for the kidnapping of his daughter at the Mehrauli police station in Delhi on November 8. In his complaint, Vikas stated that he lives with his family in Maharashtra’s Palghar. His daughter Shraddha worked at a call centre in Mumbai, where she met Poonawalla.

The two eventually got into a relationship and moved to Delhi, despite opposition from Shraddha’s family. The couple rented a flat in the city’s Chhatarpur area. However, after May 2022, Vikas said that he received no word from his daughter, nor could he contact her.

Upon investigation, it came to light that Shraddha was murdered five months ago. Police nabbed Poonawalla from the flat in Chhatarpur and took him in for questioning.

After interrogating him, police launched a search for the victim’s body parts in a forested area in the city. A few bones were recovered from the scene. Further investigation is underway.
