Novak Djokovic on clinching record 23rd Grand Slam title at French Open: Beyond fortunate in my life
Novak Djokovic showcased his exceptional skill and resilience once again as he triumphed over.
A slow start to claim his 23rd Grand Slam men’s singles title in the French Open final against Norway’s Casper Ruud. Despite struggling to find his rhythm early on, Djokovic’s brilliance in a first-set tie-break laid the foundation for his 7-6 (7-1), 6-3, 7-5 victory on Sunday.
With this win, the 36-year-old Serbian surpassed Rafael Nadal to take the lead in men’s major titles, becoming the first man to win each of the four Grand Slam tournaments at least three times.
Djokovic expressed his gratitude and described his achievement as incredible, reflecting on his childhood dreams of winning Wimbledon and becoming the world number one. He also encouraged young people to create their own destinies for a better future.
“I’m beyond fortunate to win 23 Grand Slams in my life, it is incredible,” said Djokovic. “I was a seven-year-old dreaming I could win Wimbledon one day and become number one in the world.
“I’m beyond grateful and and blessed to be standing here. I feel I had the power to create my own destiny. I want to say to every young person if you want a better future, you can create it.”
Djokovic now shares the major titles record with Serena Williams, with only Margaret Court’s 24 Grand Slam victories ahead of them. The upcoming Wimbledon tournament provides Djokovic with the opportunity to equal Court’s record, where he has already triumphed seven times.
In addition to claiming his 23rd Grand Slam, Djokovic has also reclaimed the world number one ranking, further solidifying his position as one of tennis’ greatest players. His victory was celebrated with exuberance as he fell flat on his back in jubilation, shared moments with his support team, including coach Goran Ivanisevic, wife Jelena, his children, parents, and NFL superstar Tom Brady.
For his opponent, fourth seed Casper Ruud, it was another day witnessing Djokovic’s exceptional talent and record-breaking performance. Ruud congratulated Djokovic and acknowledged his inspirational presence in tennis history.
Djokovic’s quest to surpass Nadal and Federer in major titles has been a well-known ambition, and with this victory, he has taken a significant step towards achieving that goal. Despite facing physical setbacks in the lead-up to the French Open, Djokovic was considered the favourite, and his dominance throughout the tournament proved the validity of those expectations.
