A police van carrying Aaftab Amin Poonawala — accused of the horrific murder of girlfriend Shraddha Walker in Delhi — was attacked by a group of sword-wielding men this evening.
Sources said the police van was taking Poonawala back to jail from the Forensic Science Laboratory in west Delhi’s Rohini, after his second polygraph test.
The attack took place just outside the FSL building. Fifteen people armed with swords, had set upon the van. The police claimed the men were looking for him and could have been part of a right-wing group.
The police managed to control the situation and Aaftab Poonawala is safe, sources said.
Some of the attackers have been injured, the police said.
Poonawala has claimed that he chopped Shraddha’s body into 35 pieces, of which less than 20 have been recovered. He has admitted to the murder in court too, but it would not count as evidence since the proceedings were a hearing about the extension of his police remand.
The results of the polygraph test or the narco-analysis which will be held later, are not admissible in court. Currently, the police only have circumstantial evidence against Poonawala in the horrific crime that has shocked the nation.
