Mani Ratnam is gearing up for the release of his latest magnum opus Ponniyin Selvan, slated to open in theatres on September 30.

The biggie has garnered a fair deal of attention because of its impressive teaser and a stellar cast. Now, here is an exciting update about Ponniyin Selvan. It is set to become the first Tamil movie to release in IMAX. Ponniyin Selvan is a period drama, produced by Mani Ratnam and Allirajah Subaskaran under the Madras Talkies and Lyca Productions banners, respectively.

PONNIYIN SELVAN TO RELEASE IN IMAX
Mani Ratnam, who received praise for his last directorial venture Chekka Chivantha Vaanam, is set to return with Ponniyin Selvan. The pan-India movie is based on Kalki Krishnamurthy’s cult novel of the same name. On Tuesday, August 16, Lyca Productions announced that Ponniyin Selvan will be released in IMAX.

ABOUT PONNIYIN SELVAN

Ponniyin Selvan is touted to be a potential gamechanger for the Tamil film industry. The two-part franchise has been shot on a budget of Rs 500 crore. The cast is headlined by Chiyaan Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Karthi, Jayam Ravi, Trisha, Aishwarya Lekshmi, and Sobhita Dhulipala, among others. This will be the I actor’s second major release after Cobra, slated to open in theatres on August 30. It is Vikram and Rai Bachchan’s first film with Mani Ratnam after Raavanan (2010).

The epic drama was simultaneously shot in Hindi as Raavan with Abhishek Bachchan reprising the Kollywood star’s role from the Tamil version. While Raavanan received positive reviews, the Hindi version didn’t do as well as expected. Ponniyin Selvan is slated to hit the screens on September 30,
