R Ashwin not targeting 600-wicket milestone, wants to take it ‘1 Test at a time’
Star India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has revealed that he isn’t targeting the milestone of 600 Test wickets.
After another match-winning show in the second Test against Bangladesh at Green Park, Kanpur. Notably, Ashwin scalped 3/50 in the second innings to bundle out Bangladesh for 146 as India won the match by seven wickets and won the series by 2-0.
Ashwin picked up five wickets across two innings and registered match figures of 5/95. Following his another marvellous show with the ball, Ashwin now has 527 wickets to his name from 102 matches at an average of 23.65 with 37 five-wicket hauls to his name. After another match-winning performance, the veteran off-spinner was asked whether he’s targeting the 600 wickets milestone.
The 38-year-old revealed that he doesn’t have any milestones in his head and just want to enjoy one game at a time.
“I don’t know. I think if you have miles in your legs and you can run really well. Look I think, it’s a day-to-day thing. Like I said, the joy of walking out there and going to a net and have that enthusiasm to be able to try and practice something is what drives me. As of now, that fire is still burning but I don’t know how long will it last. I don’t want to think about it and play just one Test at a time and one day at a time and enjoy this,” said Ashwin on JioCinema.
Ashwin 92 wickets behind Kumble
Ashwin is India’s second-highest wicket taker in Tests after Anil Kumble who has 619 scalps in his career. The off spinner was also adjudged Player of the Series having scored 114 runs from two innings including a match-winning 113 in the first Test.
He also finished as the joint-highest wicket-taker of the series with 11 wickets to his name at an average of 19.27 with one five wicket haul. It was also his 11th Player of the Series award which made him level with Muthiah Muralidaran as the joint highest. The Chennai-born cricketer will be eager to continue with his form in the upcoming series against New Zealand beginning from October 16.
