Taking a U-turn on his previous decision of not attending the COP27 climate summit, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Wednesday said.

That he will attend the climate summit “to build a secure and sustainable future.” He took to Twitter on Wednesday to announce his presence at the climate summit saying, “There is no long-term prosperity without action on climate change. There is no energy security without investing in renewables. That is why I will attend COP27P next week: to deliver on Glasgow’s legacy of building a secure and sustainable future.”

The COP27 climate summit will be held in Egypt next week. Earlier, Sunak had said that he was too focused on the November 17 budget and domestic economy to attend the climate summit.

Sunak’s decision was widely condemned by environmentalists and climate campaigners. Also, climate adviser Alok Sharma had criticised Sunak’s decision not to attend the climate summit.

The COP26 will be held in 2021 in the United Kingdom’s Glasgow under the chairmanship of UK cabinet minister Alok Sharma.
