Rohit Sharma goes past Sachin Tendulkar’s World Cup tally, becomes 2nd Indian to 1000 ODI runs in 2023

Rohit Sharma, on Sunday, October 29, became only the second Indian batter to score 1000 runs in ODIs in 2023.

The 36-year-old accomplished the feat in India’s World Cup 2023 match at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow.

The Nagpur-born Rohit was 31 runs short of the feat and he got there with relative ease. Shubman Gill was the first batter to score 1000 runs in 2023. Sri Lanka’s Pathum Nissanka also reached the milestone in the ongoing edition of the mega event.

Virat Kohli also had a chance to score 1000 runs as he was only 34 runs short of the feat. However, the former Indian skipper got out for a duck to David Willey while trying to play a lofted shot, caught by Ben Stokes at mid-off.

Rohit also went past the legendary Sachin Tendulkar in the list of most runs by an Indian batter in all World Cups. Kohli happens to be India’s top run-getter, having racked up 2525 runs from 59 matches at an average of 63.12 and a strike-rate of 102.76.

Tendulkar scored 2278 runs from 45 matches at an average of 56.95 and a strike-rate of 88.98 with six hundreds and 15 fifties to show for his efforts.

As far as Rohit is concerned, he has been in stupendous form in the World Cup. The veteran notched the fastest century by an Indian batter in the World Cup, breaking Kapil Dev’s record that was set way back in 1983.

In that very match, Rohit also broke Sachin’s record of most hundreds in 50-over World Cups. In the match against New Zealand, Rohit also became the first Indian batter to hit 50 sixes in a calendar year.
