On day 55 of the Bharat Jodo Yatra, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was joined by the mother of Rohith Vemula, a Dalit student of the University of Hyderabad who died by suicide in 2016 following alleged harassment.
Radhika Vemula walked with Gandhi briefly during the morning leg of the Yatra in Telangana’s Shamshabad and extended her solidarity.
“Extended solidarity to Bharat Jodo Yatra, walked with Rahul Gandhi, and called upon Congress to save the Constitution from BJP-RSS assault, Justice for Rohith Vemula, passing Rohith Act, increasing representation of Dalits, oppressed sections in higher judiciary, education for all,” Radhika Vemula tweeted after the meeting.
The Gandhi scion also took to Twitter and wrote, “Rohith Vemula is and will remain a symbol of my struggle against social discrimination and injustice. By meeting Rohit’s mother, the steps towards the goal of the journey got new courage, and gave new strength to mind.”
On Tuesday, the padyatra resumed from Shamshabad and is expected to reach Hyderabad by the afternoon. During the rally, Rahul Gandhi was seen playing drums with the local artists in Shamshabad.
Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi is scheduled to hoist the national flag from Charminar. On October 19, 1990, former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi started his Sadbhavna Yatra from Charminar.
Furthermore, newly-elected Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge will also join the Yatra on Tuesday evening in Hyderabad. Rahul Gandhi will address a public meeting at Indira Gandhi Statue, Necklace Road, Hyderabad.
