Security forces thwart cattle-smuggling attempt at India-Bangladesh border

Border Security Force (BSF) personnel stopped a cattle smuggling attempt near the Chanakya Border Outpost (BOP) in Jalpaiguri district, West Bengal on December 6.

A group of 20-25 Bangladeshi miscreants was spotted 100–150 meters inside Indian territory, trying to take cattle from the Indian village of Singhpara into Bangladesh under heavy fog.

When confronted, the accused attacked BSF personnel with lathis, injuring one personnel. The BSF used non-lethal methods, including stun grenades and Pump Action Guns (PAG), to deter the attackers.

Despite this, the group surrounded the BSF team and continued their assault, while firing was also reported from the Bangladeshi side. In self-defence, BSF personnel fired, and later a dead body was found on the Bangladeshi side of the International Border (IB).

A flag meeting was held between the BSF and the Bangladesh Border Guard (BGB) to address the incident. The BSF lodged a protest against the entry of Bangladeshi nationals for smuggling and the attack on their personnel. The BGB accepted the dead body of the attacker and assured cooperation to prevent future incidents.
