The Sri Lankan Navy on Saturday arrested 15 Tamil Nadu fishermen for allegedly fishing in the country’s territorial waters and seized two boats. Nearly 2,500 fishermen left on 400 boats on Saturday evening for fishing.
But they claimed that while fishing near Dhanushkodi and Thalaimannar, a Sri Lankan Navy patrol boat surrounded them and chased them away. At least 15 fishermen were also apprehended, and their two boats were seized for allegedly crossing the maritime border.
They were then taken to Thalaimannar Navy Camp, where, after an inquiry by the Navy, they will be handed over to the fisheries department.
Rameswaram fishermen are in shock as a 12-year-old boy was among the 15 arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy and have sought help from government authorities.
