Tackling Delhi’s Air Pollution: Expert Advice on Protecting Your Health at Home

As air pollution in Delhi continues to worsen, residents are facing increasing risks to their health, particularly those with respiratory conditions.

With pollution levels rising and the implementation of GRAP-IV (Graded Response Action Plan), it’s crucial to take steps to protect yourself and your family from the harmful effects of persistent dust particles and toxic pollutants. Experts suggest several measures to mitigate the impact of the pollution crisis.

Dr PN Arora, MD, Yashoda Super-Speciality Hospital, Kaushambi, shared his concerns about the worsening air quality. “The worsening air quality has become a major concern for everyone,” he said. “As pollution levels in the Delhi NCR rise and GRAP-IV standards are implemented, the high levels of persistent dust particles can cause harm.

It has lasting effects on the lungs, increasing the risk of respiratory diseases.” According to Dr. Arora, individuals already suffering from conditions like asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are at a heightened risk. “For individuals already suffering from conditions like asthma or COPD, the impact is even more severe, often leading to exacerbations, difficulty breathing, and a heightened need for medical treatment.”

To mitigate these effects, Dr Arora recommends some practical steps. “It’s crucial that we take proactive steps such as consuming hot water frequently, wearing a mask, and using air purifiers at home to reduce exposure to pollutants,” he added.

Ruchi Sahay, Health advocate, Earthylia also emphasized the importance of taking preventive measures in light of the alarming air quality levels. “As Delhi-NCR faces unprecedented levels of air pollution, safeguarding health has become a pressing priority, especially for children, the elderly, and those with respiratory or cardiovascular conditions,” she explained. Sahay pointed out that limiting outdoor exposure is essential during this time. “Experts strongly recommend limiting outdoor exposure during this period. If venturing outside is unavoidable, wearing a high-quality N95 or N99 mask can effectively filter out harmful pollutants and toxins.”

While wearing a mask outdoors is important, Sahay also stressed the importance of improving indoor air quality. “Indoors, investing in a certified air purifier can drastically reduce particulate matter, ensuring cleaner and safer air for your family,” she said. “Let’s take these vital precautions to protect our well-being in these challenging times.”
