Top seed Carlos Alcaraz has been ruled out of the ATP Finals and the Davis Cup after sustaining an abdominal injury. Alcaraz retired against Holger Rune in their quarter-final match of the Paris Masters, citing injury concerns.
The 19-year-old took to social media to convey to his fans that he would be withdrawing from the two tournaments. He confirmed that the injury would keep him out for at least six weeks, effectively ending his season.
“After my withdrawal yesterday and having been evaluated by my medical team, unfortunately, this is the result of my injury: an internal oblique muscle tear in the left abdominal wall with an estimated recovery time of six weeks. Unfortunately, I won’t make the ATP Finals or the Davis Cup Finals. It is tough and painful for me to miss these two events which are so important to me, but all I can do is be positive and focus on my recovery. Thank you for the support!,” Alcaraz posted on Twitter.
The holding US Open champion retired against Rune after having lost the first set and trailing 3-1 in the second set tie-break. The Spaniard decided to stop and receive medical treatment on his left side.
Speaking after the match, Alcaraz said he felt something wrong in his abdomen, insisting he preferred to retire and nurse the injury.
“It’s something wrong with the abdomen. At the end of the set, it was wrong. It was getting wrong and I preferred to retire and take care of it,” said Alcaraz.
The teenager said he could not stretch, serve well or even hit his forehand properly.
“I cannot stretch. I couldn’t serve well. I couldn’t hit the forehand well. When I turn the body, I feel it. I feel the abdomen in so many movements. It’s in a zone that I have problems, I have problems before. Let’s see if it’s the same problem as I felt before or not,” Alcaraz added.
