UK cop joins solidarity show after Khalistani attack on Indian mission in London

Members of the Indian-origin community gathered outside the Indian High Commission in London on Tuesday.

In a solidarity show, days after the Indian flag was pulled down by pro-Khalistan protesters. Nick, a UK police officer, joined in the show of support as he danced to a Bollywood song.

“Everyone was having a good time and I thought why not. Community engagement. Thank you India,” a jubilant Nick told India Today.

The demonstration had people from all over. Some in a personal capacity, while others were representing an organisation. Some had tricolour painted on their cheeks in a vibrant display of colours.

“The demonstration is to show that wherever we are from, we are one. We are here to show that whoever attacks us, we will come here and keep coming in big numbers to show our strength and support. We will not bow down. Jai Hind,” said Sarika Handa from Inspiring Indian Woman, an organisation of Indian-origin women in the UK.

Ikra Khan, who was a lively presence at the demonstration, said she has lived and travelled across 10 countries but feels most connected to her Indian roots. “We are here to celebrate community. Everyone here is from different parts of India. I am proud of today,” Ikra told India Today.

The demonstration ended with some making their way to the balcony, from where the Indian flag was pulled down by pro-Khalistan protesters on March 19, to wave the tricolour and sing the national anthem.

“You pulled down one flag, we are here with hundreds,” said Kashyap Pandya, holding a giant Indian flag.
