Acidity occurs when the stomach produces excess gastric acid, leading to irritation of the stomach lining and discomfort.
It often manifests through symptoms like heartburn, indigestion, a sour taste in the mouth, and difficulty swallowing. While occasional acidity is common, frequent episodes may indicate underlying conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or peptic ulcers.
Several factors contribute to excessive acid production, including poor dietary choices, high-stress levels, and the use of certain medications. Consuming spicy, oily, or fatty foods, caffeine, and alcohol, as well as overeating, smoking, obesity, and a sedentary lifestyle, can also trigger acidity. Additionally, lying down immediately after eating may cause stomach contents to flow back into the oesophagus, resulting in heartburn, indigestion, and acid reflux. According to The Indian Express, Dr. Nandini Sarwate, Chief Nutritional Advisor at Utopian Drinks, recommends making lifestyle adjustments and adopting healthier habits to manage acidity effectively.
Should You Rely on Antacids?
Antacids are often used to provide quick relief from acidity, but experts warn that they only offer temporary symptom relief rather than addressing the root cause. Consultant dietitian and diabetes educator Kanikka Malhotra, as quoted in The Indian Express, explains that antacids work by neutralising stomach acid, and easing discomfort and heartburn. However, they do not tackle underlying issues like poor diet, stress, or gastrointestinal disorders such as GERD or peptic ulcers.
Long-term dependence on antacids can lead to rebound acidity, where acid production increases after the medication wears off. Additionally, it may cause nutrient malabsorption, affecting overall health. Malhotra emphasises the importance of treating acidity at its root through lifestyle modifications, dietary improvements, and medical intervention when necessary rather than masking symptoms with frequent antacid use.
How to Prevent and Manage Acidity?
As reported by The Indian Express, Dr. Priti Jain, a gastroenterologist at Apollo Spectra Delhi, recommends having meals at least 2 to 3 hours before bedtime to aid digestion and prevent acidity. She also suggests incorporating light physical activity, such as a post-meal walk, to enhance digestion and reduce the risk of bloating, gas, and other gastrointestinal issues.
By making simple lifestyle and dietary adjustments, acidity can be effectively managed without excessive reliance on medications. Prioritising healthy eating habits, regular physical activity, and stress management can go a long way in maintaining optimal digestive health.
