A US Navy P-8A aircraft from Patrol Squadron Four overshot the runway at Marine Corps Base Hawaii on Monday (local time) and ended up half submerged in Kaneohe Bay.
All nine crew members aboard were unharmed. Honolulu Emergency Medical Services Department spokesperson Shayne Enright confirmed that the military personnel made it safely to the shore without injuries, The Associated Press reported.
The Coast Guard was quick to respond to the emergency. However, their rescue operations were promptly called off upon confirmation that everyone involved had been rescued.
Gunnery Sergeant Orlando Perez, a spokesperson for the US Marine Corps, reported the overshoot incident but did not provide additional details.
Witness Diane Dircks captured the moment with her camera after her family’s boat trip was cut short by the inclement weather. The sight of the naval aircraft floating just offshore drew immediate attention, with sirens heard approaching from all directions.
At the time of the crash, there was low visibility due to clouds and rain, said Thomas Vaughan, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Honolulu.
The scene was compared to the 2009 emergency landing on the Hudson River by Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger, where all passengers and crew survived.
